So in order to give my poor old brain a rest, I'll do an easy post about something more recent.
When we were leaving Amsterdam a few weeks ago on our way down into France, we got stuck behind a refuse wagon on a narrow city street. Now the previous evening as we'd been walking back from a day in the city, we'd noticed these large bins along the pavements. It was so refreshing to see that not only were they not overflowing (it was a Sunday evening after all), but there was no litter or rubbish strewn around them. So unlike here in the UK.
Being curious, we peered inside one of them and were puzzled to see no rubbish and no obvious bottom to the bin. Just darkness and a strange echo when we shouted into it....as you do, as you do, as you do !
The answer to our questions came the next morning when we were stuck behind this wagon and if a picture's worth a thousand words, then here are a few million to explain it all.
Clever lot, these foreigners.
Simple yet brilliant I thought! Keeping the rubbish underground means that the residents can take rubbish out as often as they wish and there aren't bins kicking about and getting knocked over. I think they should bring this in in British cities!
ReplyDeleteWhat a brilliant idea! Here we are still battling our way through the rubbish from last week's collection when the strong winds blew the green recycling boxes all over the place and of course the binmen don't see it as their job to retrieve it. Oh, and the road sweeper generally comes the day before bin emptying day - of course!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great concept!
